How to turn your conservatory into a gym

You haven’t been able to go to the gym in what feels like forever – we feel your pain. Home workouts are great, but the exercise mat on the living room floor just doesn’t quite cut it.

Why not consider converting your conservatory into a gym? After all, it’s going to offer plenty of natural light, and you’ll get to look out onto your garden whilst you exercise – which is more than likely a much better view than in most gyms, right? You won’t have to do battle with other gym goers at peak times for a limited number of treadmills and won’t have to pay for parking.

Here are 5 tips to help you turn your conservatory into a home gym.

Plan your space wisely

Gym equipment can be cumbersome, and you’ll want to make sure you have room as to not end up causing yourself an injury or smashing any of the panes of glass in your conservatory. Think in advance about the layout of your space, and where to place things to make optimal use. If you can, place your equipment so you’ll be looking out into your garden as you exercise.

Look at multi-gym machines that allow you to complete multiple exercises in just one machine. If you’re wanting to use your conservatory for other uses, you might want to look for folding equipment. Perhaps look at installing shelves to store your equipment.

Consider buying equipment second hand

Let’s face it, a lot of people buy exercise equipment which ends up sat around not being used. Whether it be a New Year’s resolution that faded, or they just can’t find the time or motivation in their busy schedules. You can save a good deal of money on barely used equipment if you look in the right places.

If you want to start small, or on a budget, then just get yourself an exercise mat, some resistance bands, and maybe a few weights. Remember, repetition and not weight is king.

Look at interlocking rubber tiles

If you decide to use heavy gym equipment you might want to look at interlocking rubber tiles to protect the floor of your conservatory. Manufactured from heavy duty natural rubber, they are durable and long lasting. No adhesive is required, they fit together like jigsaw pieces, allows you to move & replace individual tiles if needed – and the tiles can be taken up again should you decide to re-purpose your conservatory.

Invest in decent audio

There’s nothing quite like your favourite music to help you push through that stitch. Whether its Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”, Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” or another other song that gets the heart rate pumping you’ll want a decent speaker or pair of headphones. For something simple and portable, but still packing a punch, look at JBL’s line of Bluetooth speakers. For headphones, our suggestion would be look for specific sports earphones that have an in-ear hook to stop them from falling out, like the Bose SoundSport or Sennheiser CX Sport.

Insulate your conservatory roof

The last thing you want is to be working out in the freezing cold of winter, or the scorching heat of summer. As well as not being pleasant, you could cause yourself a muscle injury.

Why not consider having your conservatory roof insulated? Installed in a day, and at the fraction of the cost of a new solid roof, conservatory roof insulation will help regulate the temperature in your conservatory gym so you can exercise all year round.
